First premium reviews of Legal & General's range of Reviewable Critical Illness Cover plans

Legal & General’s range of Critical Illness Cover (CIC) related plans with reviewable premiums was launched in January 2003 with premiums reviewed every five years. The first reviews start at the end of January 2008. This will be an ongoing process from this time.

We will be writing to all CIC clients approaching their five year premium review with details of the outcome of their review three to four months before their policy anniversary date.

Highlights of this review:

Over 90% of clients whose policies are being reviewed in the first six months will either have their premiums reduced or they will remain the same.

If, at the review, your client's new premium was within 5% of the premium currently paid, we have not changed the premium.

Other key points:

  • When a review takes place, we take into account:
    • General industry claims experience
    • The expected impact of future medical advances
    • The number of claims we’ve had
    • The number of claims we expect to have and when we expect them to be made.
    • Please note that the client’s state of health is not a factor at review.
  • Clients will be sent a brochure explaining the review, their options and the important factors to consider before cancelling their plan or shopping around for a better deal.
  • Clients whose premiums increase will be given the option to reduce their sum assured to maintain the same premium.
  • A new Adviser Briefing Pack has been produced and contains a client brochure (‘Important review information about your plan’) as well as some examples of possible client letters based on the client’s particular review outcome:
    • No change in premium
    • No change in premium as calculation is within 5%
    • Change in premium as calculation is outside 5%
    • Decrease in premium.

The Adviser Briefing Pack can be ordered from your usual Service Team or alternatively you can download items from the Adviser Centre.
